HEL YES! Helsinki

After the great success in London HEL YES! travelled back to its roots in Helsinki's Kalasatama. The restaurant was open 13 days from 22nd January to 5th February 2011 and was sold out in few days before Christmas. 2700 diners were able to experience the event in two weeks.

 

During the dark and freezing  midwinter HEL YES! brought warmth and atmospheric hospitality into an old vegetable warehouse and surprised the locals with it's honest approach to Finnish food and design. The space was left raw and authentic, the warm mood was created with low hanging chandeliers and careful lighting. The suspension was built by letting all the diners into a restaurant at the same time. The social experience was enhanced by waiters bringing the main dishes to the communal tables on big serving plates and steaming pots for the customers to help themselves from.

 

The objective was to bring HEL YES! in Helsinki as it had been seen in London, but the location inspired the team to create new installations into the space, a large bat ice sculpture lead the way to a right building in middle of the high snow piles surrounding the warehouses in the district. Behind the plastic doors next to the main space was a monumental installation Funeral of Potatoes created by artist Maria Duncker that wasn't seen in London.
